Hey, seems like this was actually my fault. The hang happened in ssh_channel_get_exit_status(). After chatting with Aris it turned out, that it wasn't enough to just call ssh_channel_send_eof() before that, but I also needed to call ssh_channel_close() to assure the channel is actually closed. Also the issue with the poll function I mentioned is already fixed in the latest code. I am using an older version at the moment.
